Gradient Effect on VLC Media player could show Video as if its a sketch drawn by an Artist on Canvas.

Play RAR files / Splitted video Parts

Movie when downloaded from internet comes in several parts with extension .001 .002 which are splitted using WinRAR. You no more need another software to join those files for playback. Just drag the .001 file into VLC Player and you are ready to watch the movie.

Record from WebCam

Media > Open Capture Device and Play after selecting the WebCam. In my case, it was integrated Webcam to my Laptop.

Download Online Media / Streaming Videos

While online media is playing then you can obtain a direct link to download it using VLC. Go to Tools > Codec Information and at the bottom, you will find address of file in Location box.

Alternatively, we can do it by just using Record Option to capture live streaming of video.

Enable Advanced Control from View menu and you will see RECORD button (Red circle)

You may want to capture some video still and export into JPG / PNG Image file then VLC has Snapshot feature. Right on Video Playback screen and click on Snapshot.

Dear Tech Support ,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a distinct slowdown in the overall
system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under
Boyfriend 5.0 .

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as   NEWS 5.0,
MONEY 3.0   and CRICKET 4.1 .

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2. 6 simply crashes the system.
Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5..3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.
What can I do?

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.
Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme. html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to
install the Guilt 3.0 update.
If that application works as designed, Husband1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery
2.0 and Flowers 3.5..
However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5 or
Beer 6.1 .
Please note that Beer 6..1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.
Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the
background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported
applications and will crash Husband 1.0 .

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new
applications quickly.
You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.

We recommend:   Cooking 3.0 and   Hot Looks 7.7.

How to access a Windows XP or Vista NTFS partition from Linux. The following tutorial explains how to gain access to a Windows NTFS partition using Linux. Reading or accessing NTFS partitions in Linux is important for many reasons. Some users repair Windows Operating environments using Linux, while others use a dual boot operating environment and would like to have access to their Windows File system.

The good news is that this is not a complicated task to accomplish. As a matter of fact, for those using a Linux version derived from Debian, (I.E. Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc…) the process can be accomplished in a matter of seconds.

How to Mount a Windows NTFS file system partition in Linux:
NOTE: In step four of the following tutorial, replace hdx1 with your actual partition found in step two. For example hda1, hdb2, sda1, etc.

Open a terminal and type sudo su
Type fdisk -l (note which partition contains the NTFS file system)
Type mkdir /media/windows (This directory is where we will access the partition)
Type mount /dev/hdx1 /media/windows/ -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=0222
Type cd /media/windows (Moves us to the windows directory)
Type ls to list the files on the NTFS partition

Notes: Alternately, you can navigate to the media/windows directory outside of terminal to view the files.

To unmount the Windows NTFS partiton, from the terminal simply type umount /media/windows/

How do I format a USB pen drive in Ubuntu Linux for ext3 file system

You can format USB pen drive with the help of following commands:

[a] fdisk : Partition table manipulator for Linux

[b] mkfs.ext3 : Create an ext2/ext3 filesystem by formatting given partition name (/dev/partition)

[c] e2label : Change the label on an ext2/ext3 filesystem

First make sure USB pen is not mounted. Click on Places > Computer > Select USB pen > Right click > Select Unmount Volume.

Let us assume that /dev/sda1 is your partition name for USB pen. To format type the following command (Open X terminal and type the command)

$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1

Caution: Careful while entering device/partition name; wrong name can wipe out entire hard disk!!!

Now use e2label command to change the filesystem label on the ext3 filesystem located on device /dev/sda1:

$ sudo e2label /dev/sda1 usb-pen

You can also create an MS-DOS/Windows XP file system under Linux, enter:

$ sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1

Now you are ready to use USB pen.

1) Download nautilus-actions and lineakd either by Synaptic, or via the command line:

This essentially sends the F5 command (the refresh command) to wherever you're clicking. "71" is the key number on my particular computer for F5. The "1" sends the signal that the key is being pressed, and then the "0" says that the key is no longer being pressed.

If for some reason this doesn't work, try using xev to figure out what your particular keycode is (follow steps 6-9, but mentally replace "hotkey" with "F5").

5) save the file and change it to be executable:

If you are a new user of Ubuntu coming from some other operating system like Windows you might be wondering where the program files are in Ubuntu as they have a much different file system than Windows does. It's not really as intimidating as your first impression might give you, read on and I will tell you where the program files are in Ubuntu.

The first thing you need to know is that program files in Ubuntu do not have file extensions like .exe, or .com from DOS, and Windows, in fact most of them have no extensions at all. The Linux operating systems do not rely on file extensions to tell them what a particular file's type is, instead the operating system inspects the file's contents to determine it's type.

The Linux file system is split between root files, and user files. All root files require the use of an administrative password to edit, modify, or delete them. User files do not require this permission, and are all kept in sub folders of the /home folder in Ubuntu.

Program files in Ubuntu are all root files, and are kept in several places in the Ubuntu file system. You will find several folders named /bin, or /sbin that contain program files. The main /bin folder at the root of the file system is where most of Ubuntu's built in commands are stored. More system commands can be found in the /sbin folder that hangs off of the root of the file system.

Some of the files you will find in those two folders are called shell scripts, and they are scripts written in the bash language which is built in in all Linux distributions. Bash can be used to write some very powerful programs for any of a variety of tasks you might want to use it for, and many parts of Ubuntu depend on the use of scripts.

The start up scripts that are ran when Ubuntu starts are located in a folder called /etc/init.d, and anything the system has to do like start the firewall is done with a shell script in this folder.

Another place where program files are kept is in /usr/bin, and usr/sbin. Program files for programs that the user would typically install are kept in /usr/bin. System utilities, and other commands used by the system to run the Ubuntu interface are in /usr/sbin.

You will find many Python scripts in some of the program folders, as it is another popular scripting language available for use in Ubuntu. You may also find scripts written in other scripting languages like Perl.

Another way you can find the program files in Ubuntu is to look at the installed files lists for each package. There are a couple of ways to do this. One is to use Synaptic Package Manager to look at any of your installed packages, and it will have an installed files list in a tab for your perusal.

Alternatively you can look directly at the installed files lists on your system, which reside in the /var/lib/dpkg/info/ folder, but this folder has thousands of files in it, and is a little resource intensive to load.

Yet another method is to use a script I wrote that includes links to all of the installed files lists with each package's description, and other details. It is called the Linux dpkg Software Report, and you can download, and use it to generate a report on what is installed on your own system.

MessenPass: Recovers the passwords of most popular Instant Messenger programs: MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ Lite 4.x/2003, AOL Instant Messenger provided with Netscape 7, Trillian, Miranda, and GAIM.

Mail PassView: Recovers the passwords of the following email programs: Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook 2000 (POP3 and SMTP Accounts only), Microsoft Outlook 2002/2003 (POP3, IMAP, HTTP and SMTP Accounts), IncrediMail, Eudora, Netscape Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Group Mail Free.

PasswordFox: PasswordFox is a small password recovery tool that allows you to view the user names and passwords stored by Mozilla Firefox Web browser. By default, PasswordFox displays the passwords stored in your current profile, but you can easily select to watch the passwords of any other Firefox profile. For each password entry, the following information is displayed: Record Index, Web Site, User Name, Password, User Name Field, Password Field, and the Signons filename.
Here is a step by step procedre to create the password hacking toolkit.

NOTE: You must temporarily disable your antivirus before following these steps.

1. Download all the 5 tools, extract them and copy only the executables(.exe files) into your USB Pendrive.
ie: Copy the files – mspass.exe, mailpv.exe, iepv.exe, pspv.exe and passwordfox.exe into your USB Drive.
2. Create a new Notepad and write the following text into it

save the Notepad and rename it from
New Text Document.txt to autorun.inf
Now copy the autorun.inf file onto your USB pendrive.
3. Create another Notepad and write the following text onto it.

save the Notepad and rename it from
New Text Document.txt to launch.bat
Copy the launch.bat file also to your USB drive.
Now your rootkit is ready and you are all set to sniff the passwords. You can use this pendrive on on any computer to sniff the stored passwords. Just follow these steps
1. Insert the pendrive and the autorun window will pop-up. (This is because, we have created an autorun pendrive).
2. In the pop-up window, select the first option (Perform a Virus Scan).
3. Now all the password recovery tools will silently get executed in the background (This process takes hardly a few seconds). The passwords get stored in the .TXT files.
4. Remove the pendrive and you’ll see the stored passwords in the .TXT files.
This hack works on Windows 2000, XP and Vista

NOTE: This procedure will only recover the stored passwords (if any) on the Computer.

Generally, the problem comes when you’ve to format and then get those programs again by manually, which is somewhat tiring. Plus you miss out on some of them to install. But this problem is no more because of this small yet perfect utility to transfer your programs to your new OS.

This PickMeApp utility is worth for saving your time getting your installed programs into your new PC/Laptop from your old OS or another PC.

What it does?

It captures the programs you’ve installed and make the package in the default Download directory in your system. Although it doesn’t capture programs like Adobe flash or any default Apps that are associated with the system languages so its bit of annoying but not a big deal. You can get those manually.

This utility has helped me to install Adobe Reader which cannot be installed in HP mini directly as it always gives the Installer error. Its just an observation that I am sharing with you. You might have come across with this error in your Netbook.

How To Clear Stuck Print Jobs In Print Spooler

Did you ever find your printer stuck, not accepting a new prints and you also find that you are unable to clear any previous print jobs you assigned then the possible reason would be a stuck print job in the print spooler which is queue of print jobs, incase the first print job is stuck the subsequent jobs are also on hold until the first job is either completed or deleted.

There are 2 ways in which you can fix this problem.First the manual way and the other using a simple portable app that automated the same steps.

Manual Method -

Start –> Run Type “services.msc” without quotes
Find PrintSpooler and Stop the service
Navigate to C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS and delete all files in the folder.
Next Repeat Step 1 and Start the PrintSpooler Service.

Now all the print jobs in the print queue should be deleted, and the printer should accept new prints.

Alternatively, there’s also a simple tool called Stalled Printer Repair which is a portable app that Detect and Repair Stalled Print Jobs.

Start the application and it should detect the Print Spooler Folder and any Stuck Print Jobs, next press “Purge Print Jobs” to clear all the queued and stuck print jobs.

Now you print jobs should be cleared and your printer should be able to start printing new print jobs.

गब्बर की यही चीख भरी आवाज़ मेरे ज़हन में आई जब आज दोपहर आया एक एस एम एस पढ़ा मैंने, जो मेरे एक सहयोगी द्वारा भेजा गया था। SMS का संदेश था कि "Lays चिप्स के पैकेट में जो E631 लिखा है वह दर असल सूअर की चर्बी है। चाहो तो गूगल पर देख लो। " कमाल है ! शायद ही कोई भारतीय परिवार चिप्स आदि से बच पाया होगा!! मुझे तत्काल कुछ वर्षों पहले का वह समय या...द आने लगा जब MSG का पता चलने पर मैं हर स्टोर पर किसी खाद्य पदार्थ के पैकेट पर नज़रें गड़ा कर यह देखने लगा जाता था कि इसमे कहीं MSG तो नहीं। यह देख वहां का स्टाफ व्यंग्य भरी नज़रें लिए बताता था कि ये सस्ता है सर, ज़्यादा महंगा नहीं है! मै जब कहता कि कीमत नहीं देख रहा हूँ तो उनकी जिज्ञासा बढ़ती तब बताता कि यह क्या होता है। आजकल तो बड़े बड़े अक्षरों में खास तौर पर लिखा रहता है कि No MSG ऐसा ही कुछ वाकया ब्रुक बोंड की चाय-पत्ती के साथ हुआ था जिस पर पोस्ट लिखी थी मैंने कि किस तरह इतनी बड़ी कम्पनी लोगों को सरासर बेवकूफ बना रही है। बात हो रही E631 की। मैं दन्न से बाज़ार गया और Lays के पैकेट देखे कुछ नहीं दिखा। लेकिन मुझे याद आने लग पड़ा था कि इस तरह के कोड देखें हैं मैंने कुछ दिन पहले। शहर के दूसरे कोने वाल़े एक सुपर बाज़ार में भी कुछ नहीं दिखा तो स्टोर वालों से इस बारे में बात करने पर ज्ञात हुआ कि कुछ सप्ताह पहले आयातित चिप्स और बिस्किट लाए गए थे जो अब ख़त्म हो चुके। तब तक एक जिज्ञासु कर्मचारी कहीं से दो ऐसे पैकेट ले आया जिन्हें चूहों द्वारा कुतरे जाने पर अलग रख दिया गया था। उन में इस तरह के कोड थे जिस में वाकई 631 लिखा हुआ है अब मैंने गूगल की शरण ली तो पता चला कि कुछ अरसे पहले यह हंगामा पाकिस्तान में हुआ था जिस पर ढेरों आरोप और सफाइयां दस्तावेजों सहित मौजूद हैं । हैरत की बात यह दिखी कि इस पदार्थ को कई देशों में प्रतिबंधित किया गया है किन्तु अपने देश में धड़ल्ले से उपयोग हो रहा। मूल तौर पर यह पदार्थ सूअर और मछली की चर्बी से प्राप्त होता है और ज्यादातर नूडल्स, चिप्स में स्वाद बढाने के लिए किया जाता है। रसायन शास्त्र में इसे Disodium Inosinate कहा जाता है जिसका सूत्र है C10H11N4Na2O8P1 होता यह है कि अधिकतर (ठंडे) पश्चिमी देशों में सूअर का मांस बहुत पसंद किया जाता है। वहाँ तो बाकायदा इसके लिए हजारों की तादाद में सूअर फार्म हैं। सूअर ही ऐसा प्राणी है जिसमे सभी जानवरों से अधिक चर्बी होती है। दिक्कत यह है कि चर्बी से बचते हैं लोग। तो फिर इस बेकार चर्बी का क्या किया जाए? पहले तो इसे जला दिया जाता था लेकिन फिर दिमाग दौड़ा कर इसका उपयोग साबुन वगैरह में किया गया और यह हिट रहा। फिर तो इसका व्यापारिक जाल बन गया और तरह तरह के उपयोग होने लगे। नाम दिया गया 'पिग फैट' 1857 का वर्ष तो याद होगा आपको? उस समयकाल में बंदूकों की गोलियां पश्चिमी देशों से भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में समुद्री राह से भेजी जाती थीं और उस महीनों लम्बे सफ़र में समुद्री आबोहवा से गोलियां खराब हो जाती थीं। तब उन पर सूअर चर्बी की परत चढ़ा कर भेजा जाने लगा। लेकिन गोलियां भरने के पहले उस परत को दांतों से काट कर अलग किया जाना होता था। यह तथ्य सामने आते ही जो क्रोध फैला उसकी परिणिति 1857 की क्रांति में हुई बताई जाती है। इससे परेशान हो अब इसे नाम दिया गया 'ऐनिमल फैट' ! मुस्लिम देशों में इसे गाय या भेड़ की चर्बी कह प्रचारित किया गया लेकिन इसके हलाल न होने से असंतोष थमा नहीं और इसे प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया। बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों की नींद उड़ गई। आखिर उनका 75 प्रतिशत कमाई मारी जा रही थी इन बातों से। हार कर एक राह निकाली गई। अब गुप्त संकेतो वाली भाषा का उपयोग करने की सोची गई जिसे केवल संबंधित विभाग ही जानें कि यह क्या है! आम उपभोक्ता अनजान रह सब हजम करता रहे। तब जनम हुआ E कोड का तब से यह E631 पदार्थ कई चीजों में उपयोग किया जाने लगा जिसमे मुख्य हैं टूथपेस्ट, शेविंग क्रीम, च्युंग गम, चॉकलेट, मिठाई, बिस्कुट, कोर्न फ्लैक्स, टॉफी, डिब्बाबंद खाद्य पदार्थ आदि। सूची में और भी नाम हो सकते हैं। हाँ, कुछ मल्टी- विटामिन की गोलियों में भी यह पदार्थ होता है। शिशुयों, किशोरों सहित अस्थमा और गठिया के रोगियों को इस E631 पदार्थ मिश्रित सामग्री को उपयोग नहीं करने की सलाह है लेकिन कम्पनियाँ कहती हैं कि इसकी कम मात्रा होने से कुछ नहीं होता। पिछले वर्ष खुशदीप सहगल जी ने एक पोस्ट में बताया था कि कुरकुरे में प्लास्टिक होने की खबर है चाहें तो एक दो टुकड़ों को जला कर देख लें। मैंने वैसा किया और पिघलते टपकते कुरकुरे को देख हैरान हो गया। अब लग रहा कि कहीं वह चर्बी का प्रभाव तो नहीं था!? अब बताया तो यही जा रहा है कि जहां भी किसी पदार्थ पर लिखा दिखे E100, E110, E120, E 140, E141, E153, E210, E213, E214, E216, E234, E252,E270, E280, E325, E326, E327, E334, E335, E336, E337, E422, E430, E431, E432, E433, E434, E435, E436, E440, E470, E471, E472, E473, E474, E475,E476, E477, E478, E481, E482, E483, E491, E492, E493, E494, E495, E542,E570, E572, E631, E635, E904 समझ लीजिए कि उसमे सूअर की चर्बी है। और कुछ जानना हो कि किस कोड वाल़े पदार्थ का उपयोग करने से किसे बचना चाहिए तो यह सूची देख लें ||

यदि कोई ATM CARD समेत आपका अपहरण कर ले तो विरोध मत कीजिए । अपहर्ता की इच्छानुसार ATM मशीन मेँ कार्ड डालिए । आपका कोड वर्ड रिवर्स मेँ डायल कीजिए । जैसे यदि आपका कोड 1234 की जगह 4321 डायल कीजिए । ऐसा करने पर ATM खतरे को भाँपकर पैसा तो निकालेगा लेकिन आधा ATM मशीन मेँ फँसा रह जायेगा । इसी बीच मेँ ATM मशीन खतरे को भाँपकर बैँक और नजदीकी पुलिस स्टेशन को सूचित कर देगा और साथ ही ATM का डोर ऑटो लॉक हो जाएगा । इस तरह बगैर अपहर्ता को भनक लगे आप सुरक्षित बच जाएँगे । ATM मेँ पहले से ही सिक्योरिटी मैकेनिजम है जिसकी जानकारी बहुत कम लोगोँ को है ।

TRAI NEW SMS REGULATIONS

As you all know, to curb menace of Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC), the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has come up with THE TELECOM COMMERCIAL COMMUNICATIONS CUSTOMER PREFERENCE (SIXTH AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 2011. The details for the same can be found at the following link http://www.trai.gov.in/WriteReadData/trai/upload/Regulations/107/6th_amendement.pdf (6th Amendment, 5th Sept 2011)

These regulations will be effective from 27th September 2011.

There are primarily 3 effects because of this regulation.

From 27th September 2011 you can only send SMS to people who are not in the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC). According to TRAI data still the larger group of population didn't opt-in for DND.

You cannot send promotional SMS before 9:00 AM and after 9:00 PM, all promotional communication should happen only between 09:00 & 21:00 every day. This is for all consumers irrespective of the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC) list.

For promotional SMSes you cannot have the "branded" sender IDs like you have now, which will be changed to a number as specified in TCCCP Regulations dated 01-dec-2010, page 27, under Schedule-IV. "Agreement between Access Provider and Telemarketer", para 6, copy-pasted here, for your kind reference.

"(6) The telemarketer shall use alpha-numeric identifier for sending commercial communication in the format having nine alpha numeric characters, first alpha numeric character being code of Access provider and the second alpha numeric character being code of service area, as provided under the direction dated 10th December, 2008 issued by TRAI. The third alpha numeric character will be dash(-) and the fourth being any single digit (1-7) with each digit indicating a specific category of SMS as per schedule-I of the regulations and lastfive characters being five digit unique identification code provided by respective Access Provider to the telemarketer e.g XY-5ZZZZZ, where X stands for code allotted to Access provider, Y stands for service area, 5 indicates that this SMS belongs to consumer goods and automobiles category and ZZZZZ indicates five digit unique identification code allotted to telemarketer by the Access Provider."

The TCCCPR has come up with a customer preferences called National Customer Preference Registry (NCPR) where they can receive messages from categories they have unblocked themselves from. NCPR has two categories of SMS

a) Transactional

i. Information sent to its customer(s) by a licensee or Bank or financial institution or insurance company or credit card company or depositories registered with Securities and Exchange Board of India or Direct to Home Operators

ii. Information given by Airlines or Indian Railways or its authorised agencies to its passengers regarding travel schedules, ticket booking and reservation;

iii. Information from a registered educational institution to its students or their parents or guardians;

iv. Any other message as may be specified by the Authority, from time to time as “Transactional message”;

v. Transactional messages can be sent late at night also (bank and credit card SMS for instance), between 9 PM and 9 AM.

b) Commercial: Currently, any messages not in the list above would be classified as ‘Commercial’ messages.

If a consumer on NCPR list, files a complaint for receiving any SMS, it will be traced back to the registered company. After 6th complaint and a fine total of rupees 7 lakhs (for 6 complaints) the company will be blacklisted and cannot do this business for next 2 years.

Such extremely hard rules for any company to violate, even by mistake, is a big risk. So SMSCountry being a leader in this industry and focusing on long term growth has taken up this regulation seriously and following every rule to the book. We have decided that as a company policy will only allow delivery to non-NCPR numbers as the risk associated is very very high in the long term interest of the company.

So from 27th September 2011, all messages will be scrubbed and will be only delivered to numbers which are not present in the NCPR list. This means that even if you submit to DND numbers, they will be filtered at our end and SMSes will not be delivered on them.

hanging your pc or laptop ????

I do not remember the exact time of the incident but might be one and half year ago, one of my laptops was hanging a lot. It had become very slow responsive and I was just in anger. Of course there were a few solutions already on the table, like registry cleaners, Defragmentator / Defragmenter (what is the correct word?), permanently killing the useless start-up processes, sending it back if there was any hardware problem, etc etc, including this one AntiFreeze.

AntiFreeze is not made to clean you PC register or Defragment your hard drive. Its name shows that it just DeFreeze your hanged PC. VLC has yet another hidden feature I just discovered (others might know it, I didn't...). You can listen to 4000+ radio stations without installing any additional software, by just using VLC.
Here is how :

First thing: make sure you have the latest VLC version installed.

Then, go to Media > Services Discovery > Shoutcast radio listings:Then go to View > Playlist and click on

"Shoutcast radio listings" on the left.

How To Change Themes In GTalk

How To Change Themes In GTalk

Just follow the steps below and you will have a new theme in no time:

Open GTalk.
Go to Settings.
Click Appearance.
Below Chat Theme, you’ll see a drop box. Choose whatever theme you want.
Click OK and start chatting with someone to try the new theme.

There are about 10 pre-installed themes in GTalk, excluding the default one. I like the “orkut Picture” theme.

How To Install Themes In GTalk

Already knew change themes and tired of the default ones? Wanna install custom themes? Just follow the following steps:

1. Make sure you have the skin (usually as ZIP file).

2. Extract the files anywhere in your PC. (I don’t think I need to explain how to extract files :P Just do it with Winzip or any other good app.)

3. Copy the theme folder and paste it in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Talk\themes\user

USERNAME is your Windows user account name. If the chat folder (in the end) is not in the user folder, then create one and paste the theme folder in it.

4. That’s all! Now open GTalk, go to Settings > Appearance > Chat Theme and apply your new theme.

The autorun.inf file is the key to getting your USB drive (or CD-ROM drive, for that matter) to perform certain actions automatically and customize it’s look in My Computer. The purpose of this article is to shed some light on how this can be done.

Autorun.inf Structure

The autorun.inf file is a simple text file that can be opened up in any text editor (e.g. notepad). It always starts with a section header of:

[autorun]

Below this header is a list of different options. Each of these options is in the following format:

option=value

where

option is the option that you want to set and value is the value that you are setting for that option. So, if you had an option foo and you wanted to be set to bar, then you would enter:

foo=bar

(Do not use foo=bar in your autorun.inf file as it is only an example, not a real option setting.)

That is all there really is to understand about the structure of an autorun.inf file. On to doing some actual cool stuff with it!

Setting a Custom Icon

To create a custom icon for your USB drive, use the icon option. Set it to the name of the icon file.

Note: Since drive letters can change for USB drives, the file path is relative to the root of the drive. This means that if your USB drive is presently mounted on U: and your icon is located at U:\Icons\MyIcon.ico, then you would enter \Icons\MyIcon.ico for the value of this option.

For example, if you had an icon on the root of the USB drive called coffeecup.ico and you wanted this to be the icon that showed up for the USB drive, you would enter:

icon=coffeecup.ico

You are not limited to .ico files. If, for example, you have an executable with a nice icon, you can specify it as the icon file. For example:

icon=DCoTopen.exe

This is valid as long as DCoTopen.exe is available on the root of the USB drive.

Some files have more than one icon embedded in them. If this is the case, you can select which icon to use by specifing the index number after the file name. For example:

icon=iconlib.dll,2

This will use the second icon in the iconlib.dll file.

Naming Your USB Drive

If you would like your USB drive to display a specific name othr than the drive label created when it is formatted, use the label option. For example, if I wanted to call my drive DCoT Drive, I would add this to my autorun.inf file:

label=DCoT Drive

Now, when you look at your USB drive in My Computer, it will say DCoT Drive by the drive letter.

Setting AutoPlay Options

AutoPlay is a relatively new function of Windows XP. It allows you to set up what file is run when the USB drive is plugged into the computer and the message that you are prompted with. There are two options that work in conjunction with AutoPlay. The first is open. It specifies the program that you can run automatically with AutoPlay. So, if we wanted to run a program called DCoTopen.exe, you would add the this to your autorun.inf file:

open=DCoTopen.exe

The second option that we add is the message the user is prompted with. To set this, we use the action option. If we want the message to say DCoT Open Program, add the following to autorun.inf:

action=DCoT Open Program

Once you have added this information, AutoPlay should look something like this:

Adding Context Menu Items

There are certain basic options such as Open and Explore that are available when you right click on a USB drive. But, wouldn’t it be cool to add your own? You can using a couple of lines in the autorun.inf file.

The first thing that we need to do is create an action, give it a name, and a message. We do all of this using the shell\verb option. For example, let’s say that we would like to create an action called lost. It does not matter what the actin is called. It can be anything you want. We would also like to show the message Help! I’m Lost! in the context menu. We would simply add this line to autorun.inf:

shell\lost=Help! I'm Lost!

This will display Help! I’m Lost! in the context menu so that you can click on it. But, it doesn’t know what to do when you click on it. Tell the system by using shell\verb\command option. In our example, we want to run the Lost.exe application. Adding this line will do the trick:

shell\lost\command=Lost.exe

You can add as many of these line pairs as you want to make the context menu as custom as you want.

Changing Default Action

When you double click on your USB drive, by default it will open up the drive so that you can browse through the files. Often, it is advantageous to perform some other action when the user double clicks the USB drive icon. You do this with the shell option. If we wanted to run the Lost.exe program from the previous section automatically when we double clicked on the USB drive, we would add this line:

shell=lost

because lost is the name of the action that was specified in the earlier lines.

Viewing a File

If you wanted to view a file on your USB drive in the default application instead of running a program on the drive, you can substitute the open option for the shellexecute option. For example, if you wanted to open up a website called, oh, I don’t know, say http://www.DailyCupOfTech.com in the default web browser, you could user the following:

shellexecute=http://www.DailyCupOfTech.com

This will work for any file. This is the equivalent of using Start - Run… and then typing in a file name and clicking OK.

Depending on your computer model, the way you will access your BIOS set up menu will differ. Here is a list of the most common models used and the access key used for this process.
ACER

You can make use of the DEL or F2 keys after switching on your system.
When using Acer Altos 600 server, the BIOS set up can be accessed by pressing the CTRL+ALT+ESC keys.

COMPAQ

Ensure that the cursor in the upper right corner of your screen is blinking before pressing the F10 key.
Previous versions of Compaq will make use of the F1, F2, F10 or DEL keys to grant access to your BIOS set up menu.

DELL

After switching on your computer, let the DELL logo appear before pressing the F2 key until Entering Setup is displayed on the screen.

HOW TO BYPASS YOUR BIOS

The BIOS (stands for Basic Input/Output System) is system software inside your computer that helps the computer start up, even before Windows does. It also contains key settings about what the computer has on board.

In newer computers, it exists on a special chip called CMOS (stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor).

You can go into the BIOS to edit or change the technical information about key components of the computer like disk drives, keyboards, and display settings. It also keeps track of the date and time.

The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer. You may see a reference to "Setup" when you turn your computer on. That’s your opportunity to get into the BIOS. It usually requires the push of a function key, such as F10, to get access to it. That "F" key varies between computers. Sometimes it’s not even one of the Function keys, but the ESC key or DEL key.

If a logo screen—like HP or Dell—is displayed during the start up process instead, then you may want to check with your computer maker for a command to turn off that screen and display the start up information, which is listed when a computer is powered on.

A partial list of BIOS access commands by brand is listed at the end of this article.

The BIOS also contains the boot-up sequence. Normally, computers are configured to boot from a hard drive.

However, sometimes you will need to boot from a CD or DVD to (to install Windows, for example, see video tutorial). If so, you will have to change the boot order. This can be done by entering the BIOS settings and making the change to Boot Sequence. Not all BIOSes are the same not use the same lingo but you can always find this kind of setting. It might be called Boot Order, instead of Boot Sequence.

Before you do anything to your BIOS, it’s always a good idea to record the original settings on a sheet of paper that can be kept in a safe place so you can reference it later if you need to reset it.

Here is a list of key sequences for various brand-name computers. If yours is not there, check with your manufacturer or watch for info flashed on-screen when your computer first starts, before Windows begins. It may say "For setup hit..." That will be how to get into the BIOS on your machine.

HOW TO CONVERT DVD IN 300 MB

Handbrake is a free software that allows you to rip your DVD movies to your Hard Drive, iPod, iPhone, PSP, XBOX360 and generally any other video device you may have. It is a cross platform program since it has versions both for Windows and MAC. It can rip encrypted and unencrypted DVDs but protection methods other than CSS aren't supoorted. The supported output video formats are mpeg-4, xvid and h.264. So, download it from here and let's get started!

Insert a DVD disk into your DVD rom and run Handbrake. This is the program's main window from which you can access all available settings.

Click the Source Browse button and select the VIDEO_TS folder from your DVD.

Next you can select which title of the DVD you want to rip. Usually every DVD movie apart from the main movie has other titles as well such as extra scenes, trailers, interviews etc. The main movie title is the longest one (1). Usually the credits are the last chapter of the movie. Therefore you can reduce the size of the final video file if you omit the credits. To do so first open the movie with an external dvd player software and check if the credits are indeed the last chapter. If so reduce the second chapter field by one (2). You can also use this function to select only certain chapters of the movie to rip.

After that select the destination directory by clicking on the Destination browse button (1). Be sure there is enough free space in that location. You can also rename your encoded file from here (2).

Now it's time to configure the output video settings. This can be done either manually or by choosing one of the already saved Presets. There is a variety of Presets such as for AppleTV, iPhone, iPod, PS3, PSP, XBOX 360 and others. Of course you can configure each one of them to suit your needs.

If you want to configure manually the settings first you have to choose the output Video Encoder (1) between mpeg-4, xvid and h.264, as well as the ouput Audio Encoder (2) between aac, mp3, vorbis, ac3 and a combination of aac and ac3. Moreover if you are using iTunes with an iPod 5G/5.5G and only if the horizonal resolution of the video exceeds 320 pixels you should check the iPod Atom box (3).

In the Picture Settings tab you can crop the picture so that it doesn't have black bars on top and at the bottom (1). This can be done automatically or you can select on your own how much the crop you want to be. Unfortunatelly there is no preview window to make it easier for you so you can just leave this option to Automatic or None if you want to preserve the balck bars. Another usefull setting is the Width and Height change (2). If you want to rip your movie to watch on your computer there is no need for that, but in case you want to watch it in a mobile device such as iPod or a mobile phone you can save very much space. If your video has noise you can remove it using the Denoise filter (3). Weak is good for general use. Too much denoising destroys the picture quality.

In the Video tab you can choose a 2-Pass Encoding with Turbo first pass (1). The encoding process will last longer but the final video will be of better quality. You can also select the Bitrate you want (2). The biggest the bitrate is the biggest the size of the final video will be. In case you want to store the video file to a cd you can select the Target Size (3). 700MB is ok for cds. With the Average Bitrate or Target Size methods, you control the size of the output file but give up control over the video's quality. Constant quality (4) mode does the opposite; you specify a quality level and HandBrake adjusts the bitrate (that is, the size) to meet it. Finally a few things about Video Framerate (5). You can leave it to Automatic. If the DVD is PAL, the output is set to 25fps. If the DVD is NTSC, the output is set to 30fps. If the DVD is NTSC and insists it is progressive, the output is set to 24fps.

In the Audio & Subtitles tab you can choose only your languages Audio Tracks (1), select Stereo, Mono, Dolby Surround Audio (2) depending on what you use. You can also adjust Audio Bitrate and Sample Rate (3). Dynamic Range compression (4) boosts the volume of soft sound samples while leaving loud samples as they are. This squeezes down the range between the softest and loudest parts, but should make the softer ones easier to hear in noisy listening environments. Good values to use are 1.5-2.5. Dynamic range compression only works when the source audio is AC3 and you are encoding to another format, like AAC. It has no affect on AC3 pass-through or on DTS or MPEG-2 audio. Finally select the Subtitles you want to be burned onto the picture (5).

HandBrake can include chapter markers when you use the MP4 or MKV file formats. These will be placed at the same point where the chapter breaks are on the DVD. Check the Create Chapter Markers box (1) to enable the feature. By default, the chapters are named "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc. You can change their names by double clicking in the original names (2).

From the advanced tab you can manually select the H.264 options but you'd better know what you are doing here. If you don't just leave it alone since incorrect options will cause the encoder to fail.

When you are ready click the start button and wait till your final video is ready!

Google Labs has launched a service that let’s you make use of IM and your mobile to receive information like weather, sports score, currency conversion, translation and so on.

The service called “Google Guru” is still an experimental one. To make it work you have to add a contact “guru” in your Google Talk list. After it is added, you can send your queries formatted in a specific way to get quick information in reply. The service has no natural language processing so your queries must be in a specific format.

This is a quick use of “Google Guru” and an instant reply for weather information in Bangalore, India.

The service seems useful only if you’re in front of your PC and are looking for a quick answer for a simple query like weather, sports info, translation or currency conversion and want to avoid some extra mouse clicks to open your web browser and do that search. Natural language translation is something which still would be desired functionality for “Google Guru”. Apart from using it through Google Talk on your smartphone, how will it be useful and easy for mobile users is still unknown to us. You can find out more about Google Guru here.

Administrators can use software restriction policies to allow software to run. By using a software restriction policy, an administrator can prevent unwanted programs from running. This includes viruses and Trojan horse software, or other software that is known to cause problems.

You can use the Group Policy tool in Windows XP to implement software restriction policies. To enable a software restriction policy, use either of the following methods:

Using Group Policy
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
3. Expand the following items:
  
  Computer Configuration
  Windows Settings
  Security Settings
  Software Restriction Policies
Using the Local Security Policy
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type secpol.msc, and then click OK.
3. Follow the instructions to enable a policy.
The Default Security Level and Exceptions

You can configure the default security level and define additional rules that form exceptions to the default rules. The default security level determines the behavior for all programs. Additional rules provide exceptions to the default security level. The two security levels are:

Disallowed - If you set Disallowed as the default rule, no programs are permitted. You must create additional rules that enable particular programs to run.
Using Disallowed as the default is not a good idea unless the administrator has a complete list of permitted programs.
Unrestricted - If you set Unrestricted as the default rule, all programs are allowed to run. You must create additional rules if you want to restrict individual programs.
Unrestricted is best if the administrator does not have a complete list of permitted programs, but needs to prevent certain programs from running.

Additional Rules

You can configure several types of additional rules:

Hash - With a Hash rule, the administrator lists the program file to be blocked or explicitly permitted. It is hashed, and this results in a cryptographic fingerprint that remains the same, regardless of the file name or location. You can use this method to prevent a particular version of a program from running or to prevent a program from running, regardless of where it is located. An issue in Windows XP (all service pack levels) prevents hash rules from working with DLL files. Hash rules do work correctly with Windows Server 2003 and with later versions of Windows. One possible workaround for Windows XP is to create a logon script that unregisters the relevant DLL files by using the following command:

regsvr32 /u filename.dll

Certificate - You can build Certificate rules by providing a code-signing software publisher certificate. Like Hash rules, Certificate rules apply no matter where the program file is located or what it is named.
Path - Path rules apply to all programs that run from the specified local or network path, or from subfolders that are in the path.
Internet Zone - You can use Internet Zone rules to apply software restriction policy rules based on the Microsoft Internet Explorer security zone in which the program is run. Currently, these rules apply only to Microsoft Windows Installer packages that are run from the zone. Internet Zone rules do not apply to programs that are downloaded by Internet Explorer.

General Configuration Rules

In addition to the default security and additional rules, you can also define general configuration rules to determine how software restriction policies are applied on the computer. These include:

Enforcement - You can use the Enforcement settings to determine which files are enforced, and which users are subject to the security restriction policy configuration. By default, all software files except libraries (such as dynamic-link libraries, or DLLs) are subject to the security restriction policy settings. You can configure the security restriction policies to apply to all software files. Note that this may require that you add rules for each library file that is required by a program.
By default, all users are subject to the security restriction policy settings on the computer. You can configure enforcement for all users except local administrators, which allows local administrators to run disallowed programs.
Designated Files Types - You can use this policy to configure the file types to which the security restriction policy settings apply.
Trusted Providers - You can use the Trusted Providers properties to configure which users can select trusted publishers. You can also determine which, if any, certificate revocation checks are performed before trusting a publisher.

AppLocker on Windows 7 and on Windows Server 2008 R2

Although software restriction policies and AppLocker have the same goal, AppLocker is a complete revision of software restriction policies. AppLocker was introduced with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. You cannot use AppLocker to manage the software restriction policy settings. AppLocker rules are enforced only on computers that are running Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions or all editions of Windows Server 2008 R2, whereas the software restriction policy rules are enforced on these and earlier versions.
Additionally, if AppLocker and the software restriction policy settings are configured in the same Group Policy object (GPO), only the AppLocker settings are enforced on the computers that are running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Therefore, if you must use both software restriction policies and AppLocker in your organization, we recommend that you create AppLocker rules for computers that can use AppLocker policy and software restriction policy rules for computers that are running earlier versions of Windows.
