How to Hide Web Pages For Specific Time Period with Page Snooze [Chrome]

If you happen to work with multiple opened tabs, the problem arises when it comes to manage those tabs. Consider a situation: you have 15 opened tabs on your browser and you want to look for a specific tab. One way is to check each tab one by one which might be the most annoying task for any internet users and will consume a lot of time.

If you use Google Chrome, you should know that using shortcuts to switch tabs doesn’t show the preview of what is opened in the tabs. There are extensions available in the store like TooManyTabs that allows users to check the preview of the opened tabs and suspend tabs that you don’t want to use. It often happens that many users forget that they have suspended tabs and may not find that web page later even from search engines. If you want to get rid of this problem and make Google Chrome remind you about the tabs that are hidden, give Page Snooze for Google Chrome a try.

With PageSnooze, users can manage tabs in Google Chrome and snooze them up to few weeks. Once installed, the extension will add a clock icon in the extensions area. To snooze any web page, just select the tab that you want and click on the Page Snooze icon. By default, when you use the Page Snooze button from Google Chrome, it will snooze the page for one week. There is no way you can change it to something less or more.

To snooze for a custom time period, you must use the right click context menu. Simply open the tab you want to snooze, right click anywhere on the web page and select the time period for which you want to snooze the tab. Once the snooze time finishes, the web page automatically comes back to the browser. The number of tabs snoozed will be displayed on the extension icon.

To check which pages are snoozed, simply go to Page Snooze settings and it will show you all the pages. If you wish to change bring it back, just delete it from the list and it will remove it from the snooze list.

Page Snooze is a very handy extension for Google Chrome that allows users to manage tabs in a better way. If you tried Page Snooze, feel free to share your thoughts.

Change look of Google and Gmail.

Many users do find the default interface of Gmail and other Google services to be dull. There is no doubt that you can change the color scheme from your Gmail settings but that too sometimes makes the interface annoying to some extent. Google Redesigned is a handy Google Chrome extension that allows users to change the look and feel of different Google services with a click of a button.
Once installed, you can manually toggle Google Redesigned for specific Google services like Gmail, Google Reader etc. Clicking on the extension icon will display the services on which Google Redesigned is enabled which are shown with a green round icon right next to the service. If you want to disable it for some services, simply click on that service and it will disable Google Redesigned for that.

The best thing about the extension is that it doesn’t request access to your Google services as many other apps do. It does make changes to the CSS stylesheet which are loaded on the user’s browser. The extension emphasizes more on improving the readability of the emails and other content.

One thing which I don’t like about the extension is that you cannot manually add themes or edit stylesheet so that you can change the color. I am not saying that the theme that comes with Google Redesigned is bad but this would definitely be something many users will like if they have options to change the theme using the extension.
The extension is also available for Mozilla Firefox as well. If you tried Google Redesigned, feel free to share your views.

KNOW YOUR CITY WEATHER IN GTALK BY GOOGLE GURU

Google-labsGoogle Labs has launched a service that let’s you make use of IM and your mobile to receive information like weather, sports score, currency conversion, translation and so on.

The service called “Google Guru” is still an experimental one. To make it work you have to add a contact “guru” in your Google Talk list. After it is added, you can send your queries formatted in a specific way to get quick information in reply. The service has no natural language processing so your queries must be in a specific format.

google guru

This is a quick use of “Google Guru” and an instant reply for weather information in Bangalore, India.

The service seems useful only if you’re in front of your PC and are looking for a quick answer for a simple query like weather, sports info, translation or currency conversion and want to avoid some extra mouse clicks to open your web browser and do that search. Natural language translation is something which still would be desired functionality for “Google Guru”. Apart from using it through Google Talk on your smartphone, how will it be useful and easy for mobile users is still unknown to us. You can find out more about Google Guru here.

GOOLE NEW INTRODUCTION GOOGLE PLACE SEARCH

Google, the internet search giant which has been running the tech run for quiet sometime seems to be a never-stopping company. The search giant unveiled a brand new feature known as Place Search which has the ability to produce results based totally on locations, making the search more ‘local’. Google users now would be able to search for a specific activity in a certain place or a restuarant, for example you search for ‘Japanese New York’, the list of results would display all the places, location-wise which match the search criterion in a new clustered fashion.

While search results are displayed on one hand, Google would also display the Google Map which would presented with red pins, showing the results on a map and allowing users to click on the list of displayed review sites, to find out which results suits them as best.

Google-Place-Search

Results are displayed in a new way, with managed results, maps and reviews on sites.

Jackie Bavaro, Place Search Product Manager, wrote:

Today we’re introducing Place Search, a new kind of local search result that organizes the world’s information around places. We’ve clustered search results around specific locations so you can more easily make comparisons and decide where to go…Place Search results will begin appearing automatically on Google when we predict you’re looking for local information. In addition, you’ll find a new link for “Places” in the left-hand panel of the search results page so you can switch to these results whenever you want. For example, when I’m in New York, I love to go out and play foosball, but a search for [foosball] doesn’t automatically show me Place Search results. If I click “Places” I get the new view. We’ve made results like this possible by developing technology to better understand places. With Place Search, we’re dynamically connecting hundreds of millions of websites with more than 50 million real-world locations. We automatically identify when sites are talking about physical places and cluster links even when they don’t provide addresses and use different names.

Google is emphasizing more on location services and local businesses, in a move make its revenue grow.

HOW TO SECURE YOUR GMAIL ID: Google now offers a security checklist for Gmail users

Google now offers a security checklist for Gmail users. Google is advising Gmail users on how to secure their accounts by having them go through a checklist of tasks that involve following basic security principles and verifying Gmail specific options. Its a five-part process with multiple steps in each designed to reclaim the feeling that nobody can get into your inbox. It starts out obvious (security updates, plug-ins, passwords) then gets into trickier tactics. Google has shown an increased concern over the security of Gmail users after a spying attack has targeted its network earlier this year.

Gmail Help

The list is split into five parts, each containing several tasks. As the users go through them and check the completed items, they are kept informed about their progress.
Part 1: Your computer: The first part concerns general computer security and instructs people to scan for malware, update their operating system and install updates for third party popular applications, like Adobe Reader, Flash Player and Java.
Part 2: Your browser: The second part refers to the security of the browser used to access the Gmail account. Google advises users to keep their browsers up to date and to be very careful about add-ons that require their Google Account credentials.
Part 3: Your Google Account: The 3rd part, users are asked to change their password twice a year, review the websites that have access to their account from the "My Account > Change authorized websites" menu and also update password recovery options like alternate email, mobile phone or secret question.
Part 4: Your Gmail settings: In part four deals with actual Gmail settings. These include enabling the "always use HTTPS" option, as well as checking the "Filters" and the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" settings to make sure that emails are not being forwarded to other accounts. The company also suggests verifying the "Send Mail As", "Get mail from other accounts", and "Grant access to your account" options, as well as checking the "Last Account Activity" list for suspicious IP addresses.
Part 5: Final Reminders: This is last part of the checklist is called "Final Reminders" and contains general advices like not giving out login information to other websites, always logging out after reading email or clearing browser cookies, cache, stored passwords and autocomplete data periodically. The Gmail security checklist can be accessed by clicking on the Help link from the email account and then the checklist one in the left menu or visit directly Gmail Security Checklist.

Google TV now gets its own home page

Google TV now gets its own home page which show you details about all its features and services. As you know that Google TV is now very close to launch and may be announced by Sony on 12 Oct 2010. In the meantime, Google TV's official website went live giving users and developers a chance to get acquainted with the product. You can visit Google TV homepage here. The site runs down through Google TV's biggest features and attractions list and highlights the advantages of having access to the entire web on your TV. The Quick Tour does a good job at introducing the platform to newcomers.
According to Google TV homepage, "Type in what you want to watch, and we'll find it for you. Google TV lets you seamlessly search all of the content on your TV, the web, and apps – then access it with a single click. With Google Chrome and Adobe Flash 10.1, Google TV lets you access everything on the web. Watch your favorite web videos, view photos, play games, check fantasy scores, chat with friends, and do everything else you're accustomed to doing online".
A new world of apps for your TV. Google TV will come pre-loaded with apps like Netflix, Twitter, CNBC, Pandora, Napster, NBA Game Time, Amazon Video On Demand and Gallery. Starting early next year, apps from Android Market will work on Google TV as well.
Th Google TV, also knows as Sony Internet TV makes searching for content faster and simpler than ever before. Whether you're looking for a channel, show, or website, it's never been easier to find what you want. The search feature is touted the most, unsurprisingly perhaps, since it completely overhauls the way you can find content on your TV. If you think how important search is for the web, it's easy to see the things it could bring to the TV experience. Imagine the performance with Intel Inside®. The Sony Internet TV has enough processing power to easily load sites and stream videos, while a wireless handheld QWERTY remote makes navigation simple.
There is also a developers section which shows web developers how to prepare their sites for Google TV and also an upcoming section on how to get apps for TVs in the Android Marketplace. Apps won't be supported until next year. Lets see whats the magic created by Google TV.

why google give too much attention to china

Shanghai: Google Inc surprised markets on Thursday when it expressed confidence its China Web licences would be renewed. In a bid to secure the licence, the world’s largest search engine said last week it would stop automatically redirecting users of its China search site, Google.cn, to its uncensored Hong Kong site.
The saga began when Google said in January it may quit China over censorship concerns and after suffering a hacker attack it said came from within China.
WHY IS GOOGLE FIGHTING SO HARD?
Without the Internet Content Provider licence, Google’s search presence in China will revert back to when it did not have a localised search page. China users keen to access Google search had to turn to its offshore sites, meaning longer search times -- and a boost for Baidu, the top local player.
Google’s current search business in China accounts for a tiny slice of its $24 billion in annual revenue, with analyst putting its annual China revenue at $300-$400 million. But the long-term growth prospects are key.
As the world’s largest Internet market with nearly 400 million users, China has huge potential. Firms which got out of it early, such as eBay and Yahoo Inc, haven’t been able to regain a foothold.
IF ALLOWED TO STAY, WHAT’S THE UPSIDE AND DOWNSIDE?
Google’s hard-fought effort to stay in China may pay off if it successfully maintains access to the world’s largest Internet market by users.
With an Internet penetration rate of 25 percent, China’s online sector is still in its infancy. Japan and South Korea, the two most Internet savvy Asian countries, have penetration rates between 70 to 80 percent.
China holds not only huge market potential for search, but also from other Internet sectors including social-networking, e-commerce and online gaming.
The downside of operating in such a market is the strict government controls -- a source of friction between Google and Beijing that was largely responsible for the original dispute.
Allowing itself to be subjected to China’s censorship rules could undermine Google’s credibility after it won plaudits on the world stage earlier this year for its tough China stance.
WITHOUT SEARCH, WHAT DOES GOOGLE HAVE LEFT?
Without search, Google still has its Android platform, an open source operating system for mobile phones.
Credit Suisse analyst Wallace Cheung expects Android to become the most popular mobile operating system in China in the long run, beating out Apple’s popular iPhone.
China’s two main telecom firms China Mobile and China Unicom already offer smartphones running Google’s Android system.
The non-renewal of Google’s ICP licence spells uncertainty for Android as China could also find a way to make it hard for Google to develop and market the platform in China.
WHAT’S THE FATE OF GOOGLE’S PRODUCTS IN CHINA?
Google is keen to provide non-search functions on the Google.cn site such as music search and text translation.
Google Maps may face difficulties in the near future as China recently implemented new laws requiring firms wanting to provide online mapping services to apply for a licence.
On Wednesday, China’s State Bureau for Surveying and Mapping released a preliminary list of 23 companies approved for online mapping. Baidu was on the list but Google was not.
Other popular Google products such as Blogger and YouTube are blocked in China, which defends the move on the need to ensure public security and social harmony.

Google Scribe.

A couple of days back, Google launched its text completion utility Google Scribe. It offers related word or phrase completion suggestions as you type on. Internally Google uses information what you have typed before in any document. This new feature works surprisingly well.

For example, type can I have a cup and Google Scribe suggests several phrases. I really intended for the third one among those suggestions! Just press “3” to complete the sentence. You don’t need to type the remaining 9 characters.

Autocomplete Suggestion by Google Scribe

The feature is available only in English now. But, we can hope Google to add several other languages soon. There are three options available for the suggestion mode. Select “On demand” to have suggestions only when you required. Just press “tab” to see the suggestions.

Three Different Suggestions Mode of Google Scribe

A nice bookmarklet is available there.

Google Scribe Bookmarklet

Just drag it and drop onto the bookmark bar of your browser.

Enjoy this auto completion facility in Gmail, Blogger or on any web page having text fields with the help of this bookmarklet. Click it to activate the feature.

Now, a useful Google Chrome extension for Google Scribe is available too. This extension enables Google Scribe in all web pages. Press Ctrl+J to activate auto complete. Note that, the shortcut will only work when the cursor is inside any text field.
